1902: A New Beginning
Charles Henry Baker was a man with vision and experience. As menswear departmental manager at Field, Hawking and Ponting in Wallingford, Berkshire, he had honed his eye for quality fabrics and his understanding of what customers wanted. When the opportunity arose to purchase a menswear shop at number 15 Milford Street in Salisbury, he did not hesitate.
Charles journeyed to Salisbury, completed the purchase, and opened for business with just one solitary assistant. The shop was modest, the stock carefully selected, and the approach simple: friendly personal service, good quality goods, and reasonable prices.
That formula worked. Salisbury embraced its new independent menswear store, and the business prospered from the very beginning.
The Inter-War Years: Building a Legacy
By 1922, Charles was looking to the future. He arranged for his son Reginald to serve an apprenticeship at Colmers of Bath — one of the West Country's most respected tailoring establishments. After three years of rigorous training, Reg returned to Salisbury and joined the family business.
Reginald married in 1930 at St Lawrence Church in Stratford-sub-Castle, a village on the northern edge of Salisbury. Four years later, in 1934, he became a partner in the firm — the second generation of Bakers committed to the family trade.
1950: Passing the Torch
Charles Henry Baker died in January 1950, leaving Reg to take the reins of the business he had helped build over nearly five decades. Reg proved a worthy successor. In 1955, he opened a boys' and young men's department, expanding the store's reach to clothe males from adolescence through to adulthood.
The post-war years brought prosperity to Salisbury, and Chas H Baker grew alongside the city. The shop on Milford Street became a familiar landmark — a place where fathers brought their sons for their first proper suit, where wedding parties were outfitted, and where the standards of dress were set for the community.
1959: The Third Generation
Robert Baker joined the firm in 1959, bringing fresh energy and ambition to the family business. Under his stewardship, the shop underwent numerous modifications and expansions. Most significantly, the adjoining Crib and Craft shop was purchased, allowing Chas H Baker to extend its premises and broaden its offering.
This expansion enabled the store to clothe males from baby to senior citizen — a comprehensive family menswear destination that few independent retailers could match.
Evolution & Adaptation
Over the decades, Chas H Baker adapted to changing times while staying true to its core values. The store formerly sold womenswear and children's clothing, including school uniforms, but in recent years has refocused on its menswear heritage — concentrating on formal wear, clothing, and accessories for men.
Today, the store stocks premium brands including Barbour, Ted Baker, Hackett, Loake, Gant, and Ralph Lauren. The emphasis remains on quality, personal service, and honest advice — the same principles Charles Henry Baker established in 1902.

The building at 17 Milford Street continues to be owned by the Baker family.
